I finally got around to going through some photos from my backpacking trip of Summer 2015. My friend Michelle and I spent three months Eurailing, CouchSurfing, and WWOOF'ing around Europe. After that, I continued on my own in Russia for a month. Although I have traveled before, that trip was the most amazing, enlightening, and meaningful experience of my life, so far. Let's hope, it's one of many more to come!
Michelle and I did not plan to go to Iceland originally. The cheapest tickets we found just happened to be from IcelandAir, Atlanta-Toronto-Reykjavik-London. At the time, the airline had an amazing "stopover" promotion which allowed travelers to extend their layover in Iceland up to a week, which is exactly what we did. We brought a two-person tent, sleeping bags, and hiking boots, and rented a car from SADcars. After a couple of nights of CouchSurfing in Reykjavik with the sweetest couple and their cat, we got our car and drove east along the Ring Road.
We stopped wherever and whenever we wanted, met many beautiful Icelandic horses, witnessed the most dramatic weather changes, camped near waterfalls, cooked outside over tiny propane burners, drank the most delicious water straight from the glacier rivers, picked up the best hitchhikers, swam in the oldest natural hot spring pool, and took a gazillion of photos.
It was cold and windy, it didn't get dark, and our car seemed to be giving up at times. But I would not have had it any other way. Except for one thing - I wish I could have stayed longer!
Go to Iceland, people.
